General Introduction: EuroMillions is a Trans European Lottery established in 2004. The Lottery is conducted in Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Because 9 countries participate in the EuroMillions lottery the jackpots and prizes are immense. They normally start at 15 million Euros, have never been below 9 million and often exceed 100 million. Although the drawing and the accumulation of the jackpot sums are Europe- wide, the administration of the lottery is done on the national level of the above countries. Each country runs its own lottery selling, licensing, and administration of the lottery within its borders. The actual drawing and accumulation of the jackpot is done in Paris between 21.00 hrs and 22.00 hrs ( CET ) every Friday. The national lottery companies are responsible for the payout of the winnings to persons playing within their jurisdictions. The European-wide administration, in this case coordination of standards between the various national lotteries is done by the Services Aux Loteries En Europe located in St.Pieters-Woluwe, Belgium.

The Game: The player makes a selection of numbers to play the lottery. This selection is made up of two number sub-selections: The main sub-selection is the choosing of 5 numbers out of a field of 50 numbers from 1 to 50, and the sub-selection of 2 numbers (known as Lucky Stars) out of a field of 9 ranging from 1 to 9. The two sub-selections together are known as the SELECTION. The SELECTION is the viable play tip row for the player.

The Winnings Classes: There are 12 winning classes: The highest class is the 1st class where the player matches all 5 numbers out of the "5 out of 50" sub-selection and both numbers out of the "2 out of 9" sub-selection. The winner of the first class wins 32% of the common prize fund known as the jackpot. The classes and the winnings percentages decrease to the lowest class (12th class) where 24% of the common prize fund is divided between the winners. The table below displays the winning classes, the odds of winning and the percentage of the common prize fund to be paid out.

Although the percentages paid out to the two lowest winning classes are larger, the odds of winning are higher. Therefore there are more winners in these classes and hence smaller winning sums per winner.

Jackpots and Rollovers: The attractiveness of the EuroMillions lottery comes from the enormous jackpots. The jackpot is large to start with and if no one wins it, it is rolled over to the next drawing. This is done up to ten times. Whereby if no one wins the jackpot by the eleventh drawing it is "rolled-down" and made available to the next highest winning class where there are winners. The jackpot will then be divided amongst the winners.
